A tragic multiple-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at the Agbowo end resulted in 16 fatalities and 17 injuried.

This incident occurred on Tuesday morning, 13th October, 2024.

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) reports, the accident involved 35 individuals.

Sixteen people lost their lives at the scene, while the injured are receiving treatment at Amdalat Hospital in Agbowo, Ibadan North Local Government Area.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the morgue at the State Hospital.

The collision, which occurred in the Agbowo/Ajao area, involved several vehicles: a truck carrying roofing sheets (registration number AKM 548 ZY), an 18-seater passenger Hummer bus (MUB 20LG), a Micra taxi (BDJ 520YC), and a Honda CR-V SUV (KRD 707 ER). Eyewitnesses reported that the truck loaded with roofing sheets crashed into the other vehicles.

The FRSC attributed the accident to brake failure, exacerbated by ongoing construction work on the highway, which has led to significant traffic congestion.

Observers believed that the accident might have been prevented if the federal government had expedited the construction work.

Currently, the highway is restricted to a single lane, making traffic flow extremely difficult. There are calls for the construction firm to open the additional lane to alleviate the congestion.

In response, the FRSC has emphasised the need for increased awareness campaigns targeting commercial drivers across the state to promote safer driving practices.
