The National Universities Commission (NUC) issued a statement advising caution to protect lives. This message, signed by Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, was directed to the Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian universities.

Looming protests cast shadow over Nigeria's economy - Ripples Nigeria

The statement highlighted the Honourable Minister of Education’s concern about nationwide protests being organized by unknown groups. While acknowledging the right of Nigerians to protest peacefully, the government is worried about the safety of university staff, students, and property if these protests occur.

The Minister of Education has instructed Vice-Chancellors to take proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of everyone within the university community. This includes staff, students, and the campus itself. Additionally, Vice-Chancellors are asked to issue statements reassuring everyone of their safety and encouraging students to stay on campus and focus on their studies to avoid any potential danger from the protests.

The NUC’s statement comes as a nationwide protest is planned from August 1 to August 10, 2024, which has gained significant attention on social media under the hashtag ‘#EndBadGovernance.’ In response, both the presidency and police authorities have urged the youth to reconsider and cancel the protest.

The NUC wants to ensure that everyone in the university community remains safe and that students continue their academic activities without interruption or risk. The government emphasizes that while peaceful protests are a right, safety is paramount.
