The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has revealed that ministers are paid less than N1 million monthly.During an interview on Channels Television on Saturday, Bagudu also expressed uncertainty about the specifics of ministerial allowances.
Bagudu, a former Governor of Kebbi State, explained that ministers’ salaries and wages are determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC). He noted that, although he has an official vehicle provided by the government, he prefers using his personal Camry.
“Ministers, like every public official, have payments determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. I have one official vehicle, but I don’t even use it because I have a Camry that I enjoy driving. As Minister of Budget, I want to lead by example,” Bagudu stated.
Regarding allowances, Bagudu admitted that he is unsure of any specific allowances for ministers. “I don’t know of any defined allowance that a minister has, but I might be wrong,” he said. He assured that any such information would be published by RMFAC and is available for public review.
Bagudu also addressed concerns about the cost of governance, describing it as “worrisome.” He emphasized that he is well-informed about how the country’s finances are allocated and managed.
Bagudu’s comments offer insight into the financial framework governing ministerial positions and contribute to ongoing discussions about public sector compensation and fiscal responsibility.
