Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has expressed concern over the recent looting of items from the State High Court during nationwide anti-hunger protests.
According to the governor, the looted items included documents related to ongoing corruption charges against the former governor of Kano, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family, and aides.
Dr. Ganduje, who is also the acting National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), is reportedly facing multiple charges before the State High Court.
In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, and made available to the press on Wednesday, the governor attributed the vandalism to deliberate efforts to obstruct justice.
“It is unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of the historic public buildings with the aim of averting alleged corruption charges against the Acting National Chairman of APC and former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family, and aides,” the statement read.
Governor Yusuf made the remarks during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the Kano State High Court, which was severely damaged by thugs during the protests.
He revealed that the vandals caused extensive damage to the court, destroying key offices, including that of the State Chief Judge. The losses are estimated to exceed N1 billion due to the theft of office equipment, destruction of property, and burning of cars.
The governor urged the youths of Kano to avoid being used by detractors to incite violence, instead encouraging them to focus on acquiring skills for a brighter future.
He assured the public that the government would continue to prioritize the protection of lives and property in the state.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of safeguarding the judiciary, which he called “the last hope of the common man.”
He ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the vandalized High Court building and the deployment of additional security personnel to ensure the effective delivery of justice.
