Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the competition, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of herself and her family.

Adetshina, 23, announced her withdrawal amidst a swirling controversy that erupted after South African government officials accused her mother of fraud and identity theft. Following her selection as a finalist in July, Adetshina became the target of hostile and xenophobic attacks on social media, with many questioning her legitimacy, including members of the cabinet.

In response to the uproar, the Ministry of Home Affairs launched an investigation into her citizenship at the request of the pageant organizers. The investigation revealed “prima facie indications” that Adetshina’s mother might have committed fraud by assuming the identity of a South African woman after Chidimma was born, according to a statement released by the ministry on Wednesday.

She also expressed her appreciation to the Miss South Africa Organization for their support and wished her fellow contestants the best as the competition continues. “Whoever wears the crown represents us all,” she concluded.
