Nigerian skit maker Debo Adebayo, widely known as Mr. Macaroni, has publicly criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for what he perceives as a blatant disregard for the Nigerian populace.
Renowned for his activism and satirical commentary on social issues, Mr. Macaroni expressed his frustration over Wike’s recent encounter with a group of citizens. He emphasized that Nigerian politicians often exhibit a lack of respect for the people they are meant to serve.
“Nigerian politicians have never been accountable to the people,” Mr. Macaroni stated in a social media post. “This lack of accountability breeds disrespect. They forget that they are in office to serve, not to dominate the citizens.” He referenced a recent incident in which Wike allegedly asked a group of Nigerians, “Are you stupid? Is it because I came down to talk to you?”
Mr. Macaroni swiftly reminded the FCT Minister of his responsibilities. “You are a civil servant!” he exclaimed.
“What do you mean by ‘is it because I came down to talk to you’? You are addressing the very people who pay your salary!” He further asserted that Wike’s position and the privileges associated with it are derived from serving the public and should not be viewed as personal entitlements.
He argued that “arrogance has no place in public office. Nigeria is not a private entity,” he asserted firmly. “Your duty is to serve, not to rule over anyone. You are not anybody’s chairman.”
Addressing Wike directly, Mr. Macaroni wrote, “Dear @GovWike, you are a PUBLIC SERVANT! Next time you address the citizens who pay your salary, do so with utmost humility and respect.”
Continuing his critique, he urged Wike to refrain from questioning Nigerians’ intelligence. “Never go about asking Nigerians if they are stupid… you are not doing anyone a favor by being Minister!”
Mr. Macaroni expressed that the minister’s tone and demeanor are unbecoming of someone in his position, highlighting the essential responsibilities public officials hold toward their constituents.
Many Nigerians have rallied behind Mr. Macaroni, with numerous social media users commending his bravery in addressing what they perceive as the arrogance of political leaders.
“You must think you are talking to your slaves,” Mr. Macaroni remarked, reflecting the widespread frustration regarding the disconnect between elected officials and the public.
Concluding his post with a call to action, Mr. Macaroni urged Nigerians to remind their leaders of their obligations. “So next time any Nigerian politician is addressing the people, please remind them that they are speaking to the people they are serving, not their followers,” he concluded.
