Muslim students in Nigeria have been encouraged to embrace education in all its forms, including Western education, as it is not at odds with Islamic teachings. This message was emphasized during the 16th Quiz and Essay Competition organized by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) held at FOMWAN Schools in Minna, Niger State.

During the event, stakeholders highlighted the importance of education in advancing Islamic values and contributing to society. Dr. Hadiza Asabe Muhammad, the Niger State Commissioner for Basic Education, represented by Alhaji Garba Arab Abdullah, the Director of Test and Measurement, urged young Muslims to use their education for positive contributions to both Islam and the Nigerian community.

Dr. Muhammad pointed out that both Western and Islamic education are crucial for the nation’s growth. She called on Islamic organizations to nurture young people into becoming ambassadors for Islam and society at large.

Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar and CEO of the National Examinations Council, represented by Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad Kuta, also supported this view, stressing that educated youth are vital for a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

Malam Shehu Usman Abubakar, the National President of MSSN, explained that the competition aimed to promote intellectual growth and social interaction among Muslim students globally. He emphasized that fostering academic engagement is crucial for the development of students.

Malam Muhammad Isah, President of MSSN’s A Zone, reiterated that the annual competition seeks to stimulate academic interest and engagement among Muslim students. The event included various activities such as English and Arabic readings, debates, Quranic recitation, Islamic studies, general knowledge, and essay writing.

Students from 11 states, including Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Sokoto, Taraba, Zamfara, and Niger, participated in the event, with prizes awarded to winners in different categories.

By embracing both Western and Islamic education, students can develop the skills needed to address the challenges facing their communities and the nation as a whole.
