The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed substandard and falsified products, including drugs, medical devices, and other regulated items valued at ₦43 billion.
The destruction took place on Thursday at the Moniya dump site in Lapite, Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Security agencies, representatives from the Oyo State government, and other stakeholders observed the event. NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye, was represented by Pharm. Shabba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement.
The counterfeited products were voluntarily surrendered to NAFDAC by compliant companies, NGOs, and trade unions. According to Pharm. Mohammed, the seized items were acquired through numerous raids across various locations, uncovering both unregistered and registered pharmaceutical products.
The confiscated items include aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, Over-The-Counter (OTC) medicines, and Prescription Medicines (POM). Specifically, the agency seized over thirty types of goods from drug hawkers, including banned substances like Codeine, narcotic drugs, antimalarials, analgesics, and antibiotics, amounting to more than ₦48 million.
NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate also targeted illegal warehousing, sale, and distribution of Schedule 1 narcotics, leading to raids on pharmaceutical warehouses nationwide. These operations resulted in the confiscation of products worth over ₦700 million.
Additional products destroyed included illicit and unregistered items such as Codeine syrup, expired tramadol, and various unregistered drugs. Non-pharmaceutical contrabands were also disposed of, including soaps, tomato paste, counterfeit drinks, food products, perfumes, and body sprays.
NAFDAC encourages the public to assist in combating counterfeit and substandard products by reporting suspicious activities to their nearest NAFDAC office for prompt investigation.
