The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed strong opposition to the new policy imposing an 18-year age limit for students taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) exams.
According to NANS President, Comrade Pedro Chibuzor, this policy is detrimental to the nation’s education sector.
Speaking at a “Campaign Against Social Vices” workshop in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over the weekend, Chibuzor criticized the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, for enforcing the policy without proper consultation with key stakeholders.
The minister had announced last month that individuals under 18 would be barred from participating in WAEC and NECO exams, citing it as a reinforcement of existing regulations.
Chibuzor condemned the policy, arguing that it undermines the educational system and could result in “overaged” students in universities and polytechnics.
He warned that this might exacerbate issues such as cultism and other social vices on campuses.
The students’ body remains steadfast in its opposition to the policy, which they believe is harmful to the country’s educational framework.
