On August 13, 2024, a significant meeting of Nigeria’s National Council of State took place in Abuja, where the focus was on the country’s governance and the performance of President Bola Tinubu. The Council, which includes key leaders like current and former Presidents, state governors, and other high-ranking officials, came together to discuss critical issues facing the nation.
One of the main points of discussion was the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, during which some protesters called for President Tinubu’s resignation. The Council firmly rejected any notion of an unconstitutional change in government, emphasizing that any such process must strictly follow the established legal framework.
In a show of support, the Council passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, commending him for his achievements during his first year in office. They highlighted his policy decisions, which they believe have positively impacted the nation.
Notably absent from the meeting was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but other key figures like former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as former Heads of State Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, participated either in person or virtually.
After the Council meeting, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq briefed the media, reiterating the Council’s support for President Tinubu. He mentioned that in a separate executive session with the President, the state governors also expressed their confidence in his leadership.
The Council was briefed by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, on the current security situation and received a preliminary report on the protests. Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, who also spoke to reporters, suggested that the protests might have been an attempt to disrupt the government’s work, but he thanked the Nigerian people for standing against any unconstitutional actions.
