On Wednesday, leaders from both northern and southern regions of Nigeria urged the youth and other citizens contemplating participation in the forthcoming nationwide protests to reconsider their plans.

They have also called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the nation directly, providing reassurance about the government’s efforts to respond to the protesters’ demands.

The call came from the Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN), articulated by National Coordinator Mr. Ralpheal Okorie. In a statement, the group emphasized that genuine progress is rarely achieved through violent protests, a sentiment that transcends borders and applies universally.

The leaders expressed concern that the protests could be taken over by troublemakers and other unruly elements, potentially escalating into violent confrontations.

The statement conveyed: “Regarding the upcoming nationwide protest, we urge the organizers to cancel their plans. Historical evidence shows that protests, regardless of location, seldom resolve issues effectively.”

They further noted that the challenges faced by Nigeria are not unique, but rather part of a broader global situation. The leaders advised the youth to refrain from joining the protests, warning that such events are often exploited by those with ulterior
motives.

Additionally, they called on President Tinubu to address the nation, asserting that his intentions for the country are well-meaning and aimed at fostering stability.

President Tinubu has already appealed to the protest organizers to postpone their actions, requesting additional time for his administration to implement programs that prioritize the needs of the populace.

This call for a peaceful resolution comes amidst growing demands for protests scheduled to commence on August 1, driven by the escalating cost of living and economic difficulties attributed to the recent removal of the fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, and other reforms introduced by the Tinubu government.
