The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced the indefinite postponement of all examinations scheduled for Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2, due to the anticipated nationwide protest. The university is currently in the midst of the 2nd Semester examinations for the 2023/2024 academic session.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the university’s spokesperson, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, students were informed that exams scheduled for these two days would be rescheduled. The university has not yet provided details on when the postponed exams will be held.

The postponement is attributed to concerns about the planned nationwide protest, tagged “#EndBadGovernance,” which has been a source of controversy and apprehension over the past month. The university’s decision reflects fears that the protest could escalate into violence, potentially disrupting academic activities and compromising safety on campus.

The statement also emphasized the importance of security, urging all members of the university community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the university’s Security Unit via [email protected] and [email protected]. The university called for civility and responsibility from staff and students both online and offline.

Meanwhile, Lagos State University (LASU) is also preparing for potential disruptions related to the planned protest. Spokesperson Mrs. Yemisi Thomas-Onasile noted that while LASU students are currently focused on elections for new leaders, the institution is closely monitoring the situation. LASU’s security personnel are working in coordination with government security agencies to protect the campus from potential vandalism or attacks by outsiders.

Both universities are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of their communities amid the ongoing national tensions and to maintain a secure academic environment.
