The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) clarified on Saturday that suspects arrested during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest were not detained in any adult custodial centers in Abuja.
In a statement from Abuja, NCoS Public Relations Officer Abubakar Umar addressed reports circulating in the media that alleged the suspects were held in adult facilities. “The said report has no iota of truth,” stated Umar, emphasizing that the NCoS adheres to international correctional standards.
To clarify, Umar explained that “the NCoS Act 2019 empowers the Controllers of Corrections and Superintendents-in-charge of Custodial Centres not to admit juveniles in facilities meant for adults.” Additionally, he noted that the Act requires the Service to refuse new inmate intakes when custodial facilities are full.
“The Service wishes to inform the public that the said suspects were rejected and none of them were remanded in adult custodial facilities as insinuated by the report,” Umar stated.
Reaffirming the NCoS’s commitment to professionalism and human rights, Umar assured, “The Service will continue to emphasize professionalism as well as respect for human rights in line with the United Nations Minimum Standard Rules for the Treatment of Juvenile Offenders.”
He urged the public to dismiss the inaccurate report, saying, “The general public is enjoined to disregard the said report because it is not the true position of things.”
