The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission ( NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has highlighted the “Light Up the Niger Delta” project as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the Niger Delta region.
This initiative, which focuses on installing solar-powered street lights, aims to combat crime, enhance socio-economic activities, and foster peace in the region.
Ogbuku noted that introducing solar streetlights has improved community safety, created a conducive environment for peaceful living, and reduced criminal activities that often thrive in darkness.
The NDDC is committed to expanding this project to more communities, addressing not only the lack of basic amenities but also the feeling of inferiority experienced by residents when they compare themselves with those in International Oil Company (IOC) camps.
Ogbuku emphasised the environmental benefits of solar energy, mentioning plans to extract the carbon credits linked to the project.
He encouraged the youths of the Niger Delta to support the Federal Government’s policies, expressing optimism about the positive changes these efforts will bring to the region.
