The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has rescued 49 passengers following a boat accident along the River Benue in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State.

The incident occurred on Saturday, December 15, around 7:00 PM, when the boat capsized after its driver unknowingly navigated into a submerged tree.

A total of 76 passengers were onboard the boat, which was returning from the Ocholonya Market, a key economic hub that attracts traders from Agatu and neighboring states, including Nasarawa.

Besides the 49 rescued passengers, one victim managed to swim to safety, while 23 people remain missing.

Tragically, three bodies have been recovered so far.

The majority of the passengers were from Odenyi Magaji and surrounding communities in Nasarawa State.

In response, NEMA is collaborating with the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, local authorities, and divers to intensify search and rescue efforts.

The agency has also reached out to the Nigerian Navy for additional support in locating the missing passengers.
