A coalition comprising civil society organizations, NGOs, and youth groups known as the Network for South East Development (NET-Southeast) has urged Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to place the peace and stability of the South East above personal interests.
During their end-of-year review meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday, NET-Southeast raised alarms about the controversies surrounding recent appointments to the board of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
The coalition warned that the rising tensions could potentially escalate, jeopardizing the region’s progress.
While acknowledging Governor Uzodinma’s contributions to development, the group emphasized that effective leadership should not be centered on a single individual.
In a joint statement from the coalition’s chairman, Dr. Comos Gilbert Egede, and secretary, Comrade Nwagwu Nwaeke, they articulated their concerns regarding the SEDC board appointments, which they described as embroiled in controversy due to a reported power struggle between Governor Uzodinma and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
According to various media reports, Governor Uzodinma allegedly influenced the initial list of board nominees, while Kalu sought to revise and publish a second list that was seen as more representative.
“Our focus is not on who holds the title of chairman or executive directors, but rather on fostering peace, synergy, and ensuring that the South East develops as intended,” the statement read.
The coalition called upon Governor Uzodinma to refrain from any actions that might further destabilize the region.
“Governor Hope should put aside personal conflicts and allow peace to prevail for the benefit of our people. We must steer clear of actions that could exacerbate tensions in pursuit of individual ambitions,” they urged.
They also encouraged all Ndi-Igbo to support political leaders dedicated to promoting the region’s development.
“The creation of the SEDC is a historic opportunity for us. We must not let personal interests overshadow this significant achievement,” they asserted.
NET-Southeast further stressed the need for unity among South East leaders, urging them to take inspiration from figures like Deputy Speaker Kalu, who championed the SEDC bill.
“We appeal to influential political office holders to collaborate for the advancement of the South East. The era of prioritizing personal gain over regional development must come to an end,” the group concluded.
