The federal government of Nigeria has announced that all students must graduate with at least two skills under a new curriculum set to be implemented for Basic and Senior Secondary Education.

This initiative aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to connect with the economy and lead productive lives.

During the 68th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman highlighted the significance of the new curriculum, emphasizing its focus on skill acquisition.

He stated, “The new curriculum is designed to ensure students graduate with skills that will help them succeed in the economy.”

Prof. Mamman also pointed out the challenges facing the educational system, noting that the existing curriculum risks becoming outdated due to technological disruptions.

He stressed that “a well-designed and effective curriculum is essential for sustainable development and quality education,” which is why the government prioritizes curriculum development.

This initiative is part of the Education Transformation Agenda led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at overhauling the education sector to ensure quality learning, skill development, and equitable access.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing inclusive and equitable quality education for all learners.

Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, echoed this sentiment, stating that nations seeking growth must embrace creativity, entrepreneurship, and digital technology in education. He called for restructuring the educational system to meet societal needs and aspirations.
