Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has presented the proposed 2025 budget, which amounts to over N1.56 trillion, before the State House of Assembly.
Titled the “Budget of Hope for Sustainability and Food Security,” the budget represents a 48.3 percent increase from the 2024 appropriation.
In his presentation, Governor Bago outlined that the budget allocates over N196 billion for recurrent expenditure, while more than N1.3 trillion, which makes up 87 percent of the total budget, is dedicated to capital expenditure.
The revenue projections for the budget are expected to come from statutory allocations, Value Added Tax (VAT), Federation Account receipts, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and capital receipts.
The Governor emphasized that the budget was designed with a focus on agriculture as the state’s economic cornerstone, aiming to promote rapid socio-economic development.
In line with this, he highlighted the importance of sustainability, food security, and environmental health, with a special focus on the Niger State Green Initiative, which is intended to ensure long-term agricultural prosperity.
Governor Bago called on all stakeholders to continue supporting the administration, acknowledging that the 2024 budget had achieved a performance rate of 68.88 percent.
He expressed confidence that the 2025 budget would receive the necessary backing to achieve its ambitious goals. “Together, we can build the Niger State of our dreams, with equal opportunities for all,” he said, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of the people of Niger State.
The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. AbdulMalik Sarkin Dapolice, DSaji, commended Governor Bago for his prudent management of state resources, which has led to significant developmental progress.
He also emphasized the positive working relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government, which has been instrumental in making effective decisions and aligning on developmental priorities.
The event, which marked the second full budget presentation by the Bago administration, saw the attendance of key figures, including the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago; his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba; members of the State Executive Council; members of the Judiciary; traditional rulers, led by the Emir of Borgu; and heads of various security agencies, as well as religious leaders and journalists.
This proposed budget signals a determined effort to foster economic growth, sustainability, and food security in Niger State, setting the stage for continued progress and prosperity.
