The Nigerian government has reiterated on its efforts to diversify the economy by focusing on the development of its solid mineral resources.

This move aims to boost economic growth and reduce reliance on oil, which has been the backbone of the economy for decades.

Mr. Yunnusa Muhammed, Director of the Artisanal & Small Scale Mining Department, emphasized this commitment during a visit by a delegation from the Ghana College of Defence Studies.

He explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has prioritized economic diversification, especially in the light of declining oil revenues.

The interactive forum between the Nigerian officials and the Ghanaian delegation provided an opportunity to share knowledge and best practices in the mining sector.

Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mining Environmental Compliance Department, gave a presentation highlighting the opportunities within Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and various government initiatives aimed at improving and regulating the industry.

The Ghanaian delegation, led by Brigadier-General Fred Ntiri, expressed their interest in learning from Nigeria’s experience in the sector, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining, where Ghana has significant expertise. They emphasized their focus on strategies to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

The visit concluded with a mutual understanding of the benefits of such cross-border exchanges and a commitment to foster greater cooperation and knowledge sharing between Nigeria and Ghana in the solid minerals sector.

This collaboration is expected to contribute to the development of both countries’ mining industries and their overall economic growth.
