The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has set the record straight regarding the controversial Samoa agreement. Contrary to widespread belief, the agreement does not require Nigeria to accept LGBTQ or gay rights as a precondition for a substantial $150 billion loan.
NBA President Yakubu Maikyau emphasized that the agreement respects Nigeria’s local laws and sovereignty, acknowledging the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023. This stance underscores the NBA’s commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty.
The Samoa agreement serves as a comprehensive legal framework between the European Union member states and over half of the 79 members of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States. It covers six main areas, including democracy and human rights, sustainable economic growth, climate change, human and social development, peace and security, and migration and mobility.
The NBA played a crucial role in evaluating the agreement, ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s legal principles. President Maikyau called on the government to continue public enlightenment efforts to dispel negative perceptions surrounding the agreement.
