Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the importance of reinforcing the relationship between Nigeria and the European Union (EU), particularly in addressing critical humanitarian issues such as malnutrition and other challenges faced by the country. During a recent meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima expressed his deep appreciation for the EU’s continuous support and highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration between the two partners to tackle these pressing issues.

The meeting, which took place on Thursday, was attended by an EU delegation led by Samuela Isopi, the outgoing EU Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Vice President Shettima took the opportunity to commend Ambassador Isopi for her significant contributions to strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the EU during her tenure. He lauded her efforts, stating, “You have contributed significantly to strengthening the relationship between the EU and Nigeria. Your assistance in humanitarian efforts in the North East and North West, as well as in trade between our two nations, has been invaluable.” This recognition underscores the crucial role that Ambassador Isopi played in fostering cooperation and support between the two entities.

Vice President Shettima underscored Nigeria’s strategic importance to the EU, noting that as the most populous country on the African continent, Nigeria holds a key position in the region. He pointed out that Nigeria is projected to become the third most populous nation globally by 2050, following only China and India. This demographic significance, he suggested, makes Nigeria a critical partner for the EU, particularly in areas such as economic development, security, and humanitarian aid. “Nigeria is the most populous nation on the continent and is projected to become the third most populous nation globally by 2050, after China and India. We appreciate your commitment and involvement in some of the most important programmes in Nigeria,” Shettima remarked, emphasizing the importance of continued partnership and support.

Reflecting on Ambassador Isopi’s tenure, Vice President Shettima praised her dedication and impact, noting her involvement in key moments of Nigeria’s recent political history. He acknowledged her role in facilitating important transactions and initiatives, especially in the North East and North West regions, which have been plagued by insecurity and humanitarian crises. “You have contributed immensely towards strengthening the relationship between the EU and Nigeria. You have midwifed many transactions and assisted in many humanitarian endeavors in the North East and the North West subregions,” he said, highlighting her hands-on approach to diplomacy and development.

Shettima also acknowledged Ambassador Isopi’s presence during critical phases of Nigeria’s political evolution, including her active involvement in the peace processes and electoral preparations. He mentioned her participation in signing the peace accord with political parties prior to the 2023 elections, underscoring her role in promoting stability and democratic governance in the country. “You have been around for some of the epochal moments in Nigeria’s political evolution. You were part of the process that midwifed the current transition. You were actively involved in signing the peace accord with political parties prior to the 2023 elections. You have been the focal person even in championing humanitarian causes,” Shettima said, reflecting on her multifaceted contributions.

In his remarks, Vice President Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the EU, particularly in addressing humanitarian and security challenges. He called for continued EU engagement and support, especially in the Northwest region, where the security situation remains precarious. “We value the EU’s continued engagement and support, especially in humanitarian efforts and development initiatives. We need your support now more than ever, particularly in addressing humanitarian crises and security challenges in the Northwest,” he added, emphasizing the need for sustained international cooperation to address these critical issues.

In response, Ambassador Samuela Isopi reflected on her three-year tenure in Nigeria, expressing gratitude for the warm reception and collaboration she experienced. She highlighted the progress made during her time in the country, noting significant developments in infrastructure and other areas. “After three memorable years, it’s time for me to say goodbye. Nigeria has been busy, and I leave with an even warmer feeling in my heart than when I arrived. Nigeria has made great progress, with much more development and improved infrastructure,” Ambassador Isopi said, expressing her fondness for the country and its people.

Ambassador Isopi also emphasized the close cooperation between the EU and Nigeria, particularly with the Office of the Vice President. She noted that the EU has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting peace, security, and development in Nigeria. “We’re proud of our collaboration with the Office of the Vice President on many programmes. Your office has led the way, and we’ve been working diligently,” she said, acknowledging the strong partnership between the EU and Nigeria’s leadership.

Highlighting the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria, Ambassador Isopi mentioned the launch of new education programs in the Northwest, aimed at addressing some of the region’s critical challenges. She reiterated the EU’s focus on humanitarian assistance and development initiatives, particularly in education and health. “We aim to support Nigeria in peace and security. We’re very present and committed in the Northeast, and we’re now looking increasingly at the Northwest. We recently launched a new education programme there. We’ll continue to support the government’s efforts in humanitarian assistance, including new development actions in education and health,” she stated, outlining the EU’s strategic priorities in Nigeria.

Ambassador Isopi also touched on the EU’s role in promoting economic development in Nigeria, highlighting ongoing collaborations in key sectors such as agriculture. She pointed out that the EU is working closely with Nigeria to support critical value chains, particularly in the North, where job creation for the youth is essential. “We’re also very active in economic development, working closely with your office on several initiatives, particularly in agriculture. We’re supporting key value chains, especially in the North, as we know that creating jobs for youth is crucial,” she said, stressing the importance of economic empowerment in fostering stability and growth.

As she prepares to conclude her tenure, Ambassador Isopi expressed confidence in the future of EU-Nigeria relations, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to working with Nigeria to achieve shared goals. “We want to reinstate our continued engagement and renewed determination from the EU to work with Nigeria. I’m sure my successor will find in Nigeria a good partner to further develop our relationship,” she concluded, signaling a hopeful outlook for the continued partnership between the EU and Nigeria.

The meeting was also attended by the deputy head of the EU delegation, Zissimos Vergos, and the Political Adviser to the EU in Nigeria, Osaro Odewingie. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the shared commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and the European Union. As Nigeria navigates its complex socio-economic and security challenges, the support and collaboration of international partners like the EU will remain crucial in achieving sustainable development and prosperity for all Nigerians.
