In a move to boost the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nigeria has pledged to connect all 774 local government areas to the internet through the Nigerian Communications Satellite Systems (NIGCOMSAT). This commitment was revealed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at the recent SDG Digital: “A Digital Future for All” event at the UN Headquarters.
The event showcased digital solutions and announced new commitments from countries, including Nigeria, to achieve a brighter digital future. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the power of digital technology in achieving the SDGs, stating, “We will do what’s necessary to rescue the SDGs and build a better digital future for all.”
The SDG Digital program highlighted 17 game-changing digital solutions for a sustainable, inclusive, and responsible future. A global survey reinforced the importance of digital technologies for a sustainable future.
Notably, Nigeria and Brazil have pledged $1 billion in investments for connectivity, infrastructure, and skills. The Partner2Connect (P2C) initiative has secured new investments to connect hard-to-reach communities, with total pledges reaching $1.05 billion.
