The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, has announced that Nigeria’s next population and housing census will take place in 2025, nearly two decades after the last exercise in 2006.

Kwarra disclosed this during the 2024 anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development held in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of reliable and accurate census data for effective decision-making, adding that the federal government is fully committed to the process.

The announcement follows delays, including the postponement of the 2023 census under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which was deferred to allow the incoming government to take charge of the exercise.

Kwarra noted that the absence of timely census data has hindered informed decision-making and effective resource allocation, particularly in underserved communities. He further stressed the need for accurate data to address challenges such as advancing sexual and reproductive health rights, eliminating gender-based violence, and promoting inclusivity.

In her remarks, Toyin Saraki, founder of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting policies that align with the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development. She urged stakeholders to collaborate in driving progress, emphasizing that empowering women and young people remains essential for national development.

The 2025 census is expected to address these issues and provide a critical foundation for Nigeria’s growth and inclusivity.
