Chris Maiyaki, the acting executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to enhance cultural education to ensure sustained peace. Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 Peace Art Competition in Abuja, Maiyaki highlighted the critical role of education in fostering peaceful coexistence.

The Peace Art Competition, organized by the Idimuwem Peace and Governance Initiative (IPGI) in collaboration with the Black Montessori Education Fund and the Belgium Embassy, served as a platform to discuss the importance of cultural education. Maiyaki stressed that Nigeria is “in a hurry” to cultivate culturally educated individuals who can contribute to a peaceful society.

Maiyaki pointed out that peace is intrinsically linked to education, a sentiment echoed by Pieter Leenknegt, the ambassador of Belgium to Nigeria. Leenknegt noted that peace is more than just the absence of conflict; it is a culture that must be actively nurtured through education. He emphasized the need for a society where everyone lives in harmony, underscoring the importance of cultural understanding.

Uduak-Abasi Akpabio, the convener of the Peace Art Competition, argued that peace is a capacity that can be developed. She highlighted Nigeria’s potential and the necessity to build peace capacity, particularly among children and youth. Akpabio shared her efforts in integrating peace education into the curriculum, noting that engaging children through mediums they enjoy, such as art, can be an effective way to teach peace.

Art, she explained, is a powerful tool for children to express themselves and understand complex concepts like peace. By using art as a medium, children can engage with peace education in a way that is both enjoyable and impactful.

Ayuba Caleb, representing the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ICPR), highlighted the ongoing suffering caused by armed conflicts and humanitarian crises. He called on stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to addressing these global challenges. Caleb emphasized the importance of a collective effort to bring about peace and resolve conflicts worldwide.

The discussions at the Peace Art Competition underscored the vital role of cultural education in achieving sustained peace in Nigeria. By fostering a culture of peace through education, Nigeria can work towards a future where peaceful coexistence is the norm. The collaboration between educational institutions, international partners, and local initiatives is crucial in building a society that values and practices peace.
