In a resounding display of unity, athleticism, and international cooperation, Nigeria is gearing up to host the second edition of the Africa Military Games. With over 23 countries expressing keen interest, this historic event promises to be a celebration of both military prowess and shared values across the African continent.
Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters and Chairman of the Sport Organising Committee, emphasized that hosting the Africa Military Games serves as a powerful platform to enhance peace and security. By welcoming athletes, officials, and spectators from diverse backgrounds, Nigeria aims to demonstrate that it is a safe and welcoming nation.
The games transcend mere competition; they symbolize diplomacy in action. Major-General Maikano Abdullahi, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), aptly themed the event as “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports.” This gathering provides an opportunity for African nations to tell their stories on a global stage, narrative of collaboration, resilience, and shared aspirations.
Beyond the African continent, other nations have taken notice. Russia, Germany, and the United States of America have expressed interest in participating, recognizing the significance of this sporting spectacle. Meanwhile, neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad are equally enthusiastic about joining the festivities.
From November 5 to 18, the Moshood Abiola National Stadium will witness fierce competition across 19 sporting disciplines. Athletes will showcase their skills in Badminton, Boxing, Basketball, Football, Golf, Athletics, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, and Wrestling. As the continent unites, these events will not only crown champions but also foster camaraderie and mutual respect.
The idea for the Africa Military Games traces back to Cameroonian national Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. In 2000, during the CISM meeting in Johannesburg, Kenyan military personnel Jack Tuwei and Frank Mulu passionately presented Nairobi as the host city for the inaugural edition. Since then, the games have grown in stature, attracting athletes from diverse backgrounds.
While the stage is set for this historic event, the budget allocated remains undisclosed. However, organizers assure us that no stone has been left unturned to ensure a seamless experience for participants and spectators alike.
As Nigeria readies itself to welcome athletes, dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts, the 2nd Africa Military Games stand as a testament to the power of sport in bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and celebrating our shared humanity. Let us unite, compete, and create lasting memories on this grand stage, an embodiment of strength, resilience, and the spirit of Africa.
