In a bold move, the Federal Government has taken decisive action to shut down an unlawful gold mine site located in the Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, highlighted that this operation is a testament to the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to combat illegal mining and revitalize the mining sector, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s economic profile.
A statement released by Segun Tomori, the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, revealed that the operation was conducted by the diligent Mining Marshals in the Iyeh Odogbe region, specifically targeting the Isanlu community in the Yagba East LGA.
Tomori explained that the operation successfully dismantled the activities of illegal miners, who had unlawfully occupied the site for a staggering 16 years, preventing legally authorized miners with valid licenses from accessing the area. This operation marks a significant step towards restoring order and proper regulation in the mining sector.
Under the leadership of Commander Attah Onoja, the Mining Marshals carried out the operation, resulting in the apprehension of seven suspects who were leading various groups of illegal miners in the region.
Tomori emphasized that the site workers have been given a grace period of five days to vacate the premises completely. Simultaneously, efforts to secure the area and restore it for legitimate mining activities will continue promptly.
In a related development, on July 12, the Federal Government made headlines by arresting eight Chinese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Lokpaukwu community of Umuchieze, within the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State. This further demonstrates the government’s resolve to tackle illegal mining across the country.
