Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has pledged that lawmakers will take decisive actions to alleviate the economic difficulties currently afflicting the nation. He assured that efforts would be made to combat the ongoing hunger and hardship experienced by many citizens.
Agbese made his comments during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, addressing concerns raised by some Nigerians regarding the lawmakers’ decision to implement a 50 percent salary reduction.
This motion was introduced in a recent plenary session, where Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu emphasized the urgency of the pay cut.
In light of this, Agbese remarked, “Economic struggles are universally recognized; they resonate throughout the country. As a legislative body, we are committed to exploring every avenue to address these pressing issues.”
He expressed confidence that the current legislative framework would signify the end of discussions surrounding palliative measures in Nigeria. “We are determined to work relentlessly to ensure that this is the last time we confront such challenges related to hardship and hunger,” he asserted.
Agbese highlighted that the 50 percent salary reduction is not merely a symbolic gesture but a crucial step toward fostering the necessary changes to uplift the country.
He reiterated that the commitment to this salary cut is not mere talk, stating, “We are genuinely dedicated to our promise to the Nigerian people.”
Additionally, Agbese noted that beyond the salary reduction, the House is actively pursuing various empowerment programs through constituency initiatives aimed at providing support to the populace.
He indicated that these efforts would extend to aiding young individuals in agricultural endeavors, empowering entrepreneurs, and assisting students in their academic pursuits.
Agbese encouraged the public not to question the House’s intentions regarding the salary cut, asserting that the decision was driven by a sense of patriotism and genuine concern for the nation’s welfare.
He stated, “When intentions are sincere, there is no reason to doubt or mock our commitment to this 50 percent salary reduction.”
He concluded by emphasizing that the visible signs of hunger in society reflect the urgent need for effective interventions, which, when properly enacted, will positively impact the lives of the citizens.
