The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally issued a travel advisory for its citizens residing in the United Kingdom, in light of the recent surge in anti-asylum riots that have erupted across various regions of the country.

Significant unrest has been reported in multiple towns and cities, with alarming incidents including the tragic deaths of three young girls and the critical injury of five children due to a knife attack during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed the government’s concerns in a statement released on Monday. The advisory emphasizes the need for Nigerian nationals in the UK to remain vigilant, urging them to avoid political demonstrations, protests, rallies, and any crowded or large gatherings.

The advisory, entitled “THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ISSUES THE FOLLOWING TRAVEL ALERT TO CITIZENS PLANNING TO VISIT THE UNITED KINGDOM,” articulates the following points:

“There exists an escalating risk of violence and civil disorder in the UK, exacerbated by the recent riots linked to the tragic killing of three young girls at a public event.

The situation has deteriorated significantly, with reports indicating assaults on law enforcement personnel and damage to public infrastructure.

Consequently, Nigerian citizens are urged to adopt precautionary measures such as to Steer clear of political demonstrations, protests, rallies, or marches.
Avoid densely populated areas and large gatherings.

Maintain a high level of vigilance and self-awareness at all times.

“Recent weeks have witnessed large-scale demonstrations instigated by far-right and other extraparliamentary factions in various parts of the UK, with instances of unrest becoming more prevalent.

These disturbances have been further inflamed by the tragic deaths of the three girls, which have fostered an anti-immigration sentiment particularly directed towards Muslim immigrants and individuals of color.
