The National Association of University Students (NAUS) is calling on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to intervene in a crisis affecting Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) graduates and their participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
The NYSC has recently implemented a new policy requiring SLT graduates to obtain a license from the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) before registering for the program. This sudden change has left many graduates stranded at NYSC orientation camps, unable to proceed with registration.
The NAUS believes that the new policy is unfair and has caused unnecessary hardship for SLT graduates. They argue that the policy was not clearly communicated, leaving graduates unprepared.
The association has urged the NUC to suspend the enforcement of the policy and ensure that all stakeholders are properly informed of any future requirements. They also called for a temporary solution to allow stranded graduates to register for NYSC while working on obtaining the necessary certification later.
Oluwatosin Oladipupo, Chairman of the NAUS Campus Monitoring Committee, Oyo State Chapter, emphasized the need for clarity and fairness in the registration process. He stated that the policy change has created confusion and frustration among SLT graduates.
The NAUS hopes that the NUC will take swift action to resolve the issue and ensure that all eligible graduates can participate in the NYSC program without further delay.
