In response to the persistent insecurity plaguing Nigeria, the Medical Association of Nigeria (NMA) has initiated a comprehensive halt to medical services across all government and private hospitals in Akwa Ibom State. This protest action is a direct response to the prolonged captivity of one of their members, Dr. John Esu, who was abducted by gunmen on April 30, 2024, in Oron local government area and has remained in captivity for over two weeks.

The decision to suspend medical services reflects the profound frustration and outrage among medical professionals regarding the apparent insensitivity of government and security agencies toward ensuring the safety of citizens, including healthcare workers.

Prof. Emem Abraham, the NMA State Chairman, emphasized the necessity of this strike as a means to urgently draw attention to the plight of medical workers facing grave risks due to insecurity. Abraham underscored the gravity of the situation by ordering all members, including consultants in government and private hospitals, to withdraw their services immediately. This collective action, according to Abraham, will be subject to review after a period of 72 hours.

“The NMA, Akwa Ibom State chapter, has resolved to suspend services in solidarity with our member who has endured over 15 days in captivity. This cessation of services is effective immediately and will be reevaluated after 72 hours,” stated Prof. Emem Abraham.

The decision to halt medical services underscores the profound psychological impact experienced by members of the association due to Dr. John Esu’s continued ordeal in the hands of kidnappers. The medical community’s inability to provide care under these circumstances highlights the urgent need for concrete actions from authorities to ensure the safety and security of healthcare professionals and all citizens alike.
