Vice-President Kashim Shettima has declared that Nigeria is not merely trying to catch up with the global economy but is instead positioned to surpass it.
This statement was made on Tuesday during the launch of the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative in Dutse, Jigawa State.
Held at the Yakubu Gowon NYSC Orientation Camp in Fanisau, this initiative forms part of Nigeria’s strategy to lead in digital transformation across Africa. In collaboration with the tech firm Gluwa, the initiative aims to annually train 1,000 Nigerians in fields such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other advanced technologies.
Shettima encouraged the youth to engage with this program, emphasizing its significance for the country’s economic trajectory. “We are not just catching up with the global arena; we are set to surpass it. This initiative provides an opportunity for participants to integrate into a worldwide workforce, fostering the innovations that will define our future,” he asserted.
He highlighted Jigawa’s role as a leader in adopting digital technologies, referring to the program as “a homecoming ceremony for those who have facilitated our journey through the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Expanding on the federal government’s broader ambitions, Shettima stated, “We are implementing this initiative nationwide to establish a network of technology hubs that will drive Nigeria’s economic advancement for years to come.”
He praised the collaboration with Gluwa, noting that it supports President Tinubu’s vision to transform Nigeria’s digital landscape. Acknowledging Gluwa’s significant contributions, he commended the firm for empowering Aella Microfinance Bank, which has facilitated the distribution of over N100 billion to two million Nigerians.
Regarding the initiative’s global impact, Shettima remarked, “Our goal is to position Nigeria as a top destination for technology outsourcing, creating a model that merges international expertise with local talent.”
Earlier, Governor Umar Namadi emphasized the initiative’s importance, calling it a unique opportunity for the youth. He encouraged citizens to explore the field of ICT Outsourcing to harness its benefits, particularly in job creation and economic contribution.
“Jigawa has a legacy in ICT education, with a large pool of skilled and qualified youths in various technology sectors, thanks to the establishment of our esteemed Informatics Institute over two decades ago.”
He added that this new initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Jigawa State’s 12-Point Agenda, which prioritizes digital innovation and technology.
Namadi also announced the formation of a new ICT and Digital Economy Agency in the state, stating, “We are more committed than ever to establishing Jigawa State as a leading ICT hub in Nigeria.”
