The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the New Port Harcourt Refinery (NPHR) rehabilitation project is over 90% completed.
The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, disclosed this during a facility visit by labour leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State on Monday. Kyari, represented by Ishaku Abdullahi, the Executive Vice President of Downstream, assured that the upgraded refinery would rival any facility globally with its state-of-the-art features.
“The technical work is not just at an advanced stage but is over 90% completed. With a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day (bpd), the New Port Harcourt Refinery will operate alongside the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a capacity of 60,000 bpd, to meet the country’s energy needs,” Abdullahi stated.
He further highlighted plans to establish a professional and technical operation and maintenance (O&M) team to ensure adherence to global best practices in refinery maintenance.
“This facility is undergoing a complete rehabilitation and upgrade to make it state-of-the-art, comparable to any refinery worldwide. According to the contractors’ reports, the technical work is over 90% completed. Once the rehab is finalized, the combined output of 210,000 bpd from the two refineries will significantly enhance our refining capacity and energy sufficiency,” Abdullahi added.
He emphasized the NNPCL’s commitment to ensuring value for investments and a seamless refining process. “We are establishing a professional O&M team to sustain the facilities and ensure efficiency. This includes the Old Refinery, which will also be operational,” he noted.
The NPHR upgrade is expected to play a critical role in addressing the nation’s energy challenges while reducing reliance on imported refined products.
