The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has condemned the escalating levels of poverty in the nation, deeming the situation unacceptable and calling for a comprehensive reevaluation of government policies and programs to effectively tackle the issue.

Ladipo Johnson, the national publicity secretary of NNPP, emphasized the necessity of this approach to ensure peace and stability within the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja to commemorate this year’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the NNPP highlighted that recent economic developments have led to a deterioration of the poverty index under the Tinubu administration, with an increasing number of citizens enduring severe economic hardships that clearly indicate widespread poverty.

The party criticized the gap between the government’s stated reform agenda and the reality of its policies, suggesting that the current trajectory appears grim.

NNPP also pointed out the lavish lifestyles and spending habits of government officials and institutions, which they argue are disproportionate and fail to reflect a commitment to inclusivity.

They warned that such disparities contribute to significant inequality and disregard for the struggles faced by the populace, undermining prospects for peace and stability.

“In light of the current economic challenges, it is essential for the government to introspect and implement strategic, effective measures to recalibrate its policies and programs, aimed at curbing the escalating poverty levels,” the party stated.

“This is crucial for restoring public faith in the government’s ability to provide hope and to deter any potential drift towards anti-social behavior that could jeopardize public order,” the NNPP added.

Furthermore, they stressed the importance of government officials demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of the people by adopting more modest and accountable spending practices. The NNPP advocates for a focus on support for the underprivileged rather than the excessive extravagance observed in recent times.
