The North Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has applauded Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State for distancing himself from the endorsement of the beleaguered National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, calling it a positive development.
Last week, Governor Sule visited Ganduje at the APC national Secretariat in Abuja, where he was perceived to be rallying support for the chairman. However, the North Central APC forum interpreted this visit as a betrayal, especially given the region’s ongoing campaign for the National Chairmanship position, which they believe should rightfully belong to them. They expressed that the interests of the region should not be compromised for the benefit of a single individual.
Saleh Zazzaga, the forum’s Chairman, spoke to reporters about the situation, condemning Sule’s visit as an unnecessary act that undermines the collective aspirations of the people for personal gain. He emphasized that such actions are detrimental to the unity and goals of the North Central region.
In response, Governor Sule clarified that his visit was not meant to endorse Ganduje but to address party matters, including the forthcoming Edo State election and the ongoing crisis within the Benue APC. Sule, through his Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Kassim Muh’d Kassim, asserted that attending the national secretariat does not equate to an endorsement and that his visit was prompted by an invitation from Ganduje.
Commenting on Sule’s subsequent denial of support for Ganduje, Zazzaga remarked in Jos, Plateau State, that the denial might have been a reaction to the discontent expressed by party members and stakeholders from the North Central region. He noted that regardless of whether the denial stemmed from pressure or was merely a political maneuver, it is a welcome change, as it indicates an understanding that regional unity supersedes individual interests.
Zazzaga commended other North Central governors, legislators, and party leaders for their steadfast commitment to the region’s quest for the National Chairmanship. He reiterated that they would not be discouraged by any acts of betrayal.
He also expressed hopes for a fruitful National Executive Committee (NEC) and caucus meeting scheduled for September 11-12, which he believes will address critical issues and propel the party forward.
