The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) and the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) have jointly called for the Minister of State for Defence to retain his position, emphasizing the necessity of continuity to uphold the recent strides made in combating insecurity.
The groups highlighted that, under the guidance of President Tinubu and the strategic initiatives led by Defence Minister Matawalle, the nation has experienced a substantial shift in the security dynamics, positively impacting the lives of numerous citizens.
In separate statements from their leaders, Salihu Suleiman for NAN and Yerima Shettima for AYCF, they articulated, “Prior to Matawalle’s move to Sokoto, the North-West was engulfed in the turmoil of banditry and abductions, turning it into a tragic battleground for both lawbreakers and innocent individuals.”
The statement further elaborated that the rampant spread of these brutal acts transformed local communities into perilous zones, making daily survival a daunting task for residents. However, they noted that the current security climate has significantly improved due to deliberate efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
Under Matawalle’s leadership, the groups acknowledged, “We have witnessed determined actions to target bandits and dismantle their networks, effectively driving them into remote areas. This has greatly reduced their reach, enabling our citizens to gradually reclaim their lives and livelihoods.”
Salihu emphasized that the resilience and strategic direction provided by Minister Matawalle have been crucial in fulfilling the Tinubu administration’s commitment to enhanced national security.
Shettima, representing AYCF, articulated the community’s understanding of the dire implications of living under constant threat, recognizing the value of the recent improvements in security. He cautioned those who might overlook the significance of these developments due to personal interests in the conflict, urging a deeper appreciation for the genuine experiences of those affected.
“The peace we are beginning to experience is a collective achievement that warrants gratitude and reflection,” the groups asserted.
They also expressed appreciation for the support received from international partners, whose assistance has been instrumental in bolstering efforts against insurgent threats.
While celebrating these advancements, NAN and AYCF acknowledged that the path to enduring peace remains a work in progress. They urged President Tinubu to retain Mohammed Matawalle in his vital position as Defence Minister.
“The continuation of his leadership is crucial for effectively managing the complexities of this ongoing struggle and ensuring that our resources are allocated wisely,” they stated.
Shettima concluded, “True victory will only be attained through a complete cessation of hostilities, disarmament, demobilization, and the reintegration of former combatants within our region.”
Both organizations reaffirmed their support for the government’s and military’s initiatives against insecurity, expressing confidence that, with unwavering dedication and adherence to the law, a safer and more secure North-West can ultimately be achieved.
