In preparation for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken significant steps to enhance security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Dr. Olusola Odumosu, who is the Commandant of the NSCDC in the FCT, has announced the deployment of a substantial number of personnel to ensure that residents and visitors remain safe during the festive period. Specifically, 5,112 NSCDC personnel have been dispatched across the state.
The deployment is extensive and covers all six area councils within the FCT. These councils include key areas and locations that are considered vulnerable to criminal activities. The personnel will also be present in the city center and other crucial spots that might attract large crowds during the celebrations.
According to Samuel Idoko, the spokesperson for the command, the NSCDC is deeply committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property. The Corps also focuses on protecting Critical National Assets within the FCT. This is especially important during significant events like Eid-el-Kabir, where the influx of people and heightened activities can pose security challenges.
To bolster security efforts, the NSCDC has mobilized several specialized units. These units include the Armed Squad, equipped to handle any armed threats; Intelligence Operatives, responsible for gathering and analyzing information to prevent incidents before they occur; Counter Terrorism Unit, focused on preventing and responding to terrorist activities; Female Strike Force, a team of female officers trained to handle specific security situations; Special Crack Squad (Operation Adaka-su), a highly trained unit ready to respond to various emergencies; and Agro Rangers, tasked with protecting agricultural assets and rural communities. These specialized units will be spread across the FCT to ensure comprehensive security coverage.
The NSCDC is not working alone. They are collaborating closely with other security agencies to provide a robust security presence. This includes joint operations and coordinated efforts to cover various public venues. During the Eid celebrations, prayer grounds, motor parks, recreational centers, and other public places will have heightened security. This collaboration ensures that all bases are covered and that there is a quick response to any potential threats.
Dr. Odumosu has emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism during this period. He highlighted that the operational guidelines must be strictly followed. This adherence is crucial to maintaining public trust and ensuring that the security personnel conduct themselves appropriately. He stated, “You are to ensure 24-hour protection of all these infrastructures and the holidaymakers in the city. We must show commitment in the discharge of our duties as law enforcers.”
The Commandant also warned against carelessness and overzealousness. He stressed that while it is important to be vigilant, the officers must not overstep their bounds. The operational order must be followed to the letter to ensure that the actions of the NSCDC personnel are within the scope of their duties and that they do not infringe on the rights of the public.
For the security measures to be effective, the cooperation of the residents is essential. Dr. Odumosu urged the public to work with the security personnel and to report any suspicious activities promptly. This proactive approach by the community can significantly enhance the overall security during the Eid celebrations. He urged, “Residents should cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities promptly. This will ensure a secure and enjoyable Sallah celebration in the FCT.”
