The National Union of Mining Labourers (NUMW), Niger State branch, has expressed its full support for the state government’s establishment of a Taskforce dedicated to revenue collection.

During a press briefing held in Minna on Monday, Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, Chairman of the State branch, endorsed the government’s decision to delegate revenue collection responsibilities to MARUFAWA Concept and Project Limited for Chanchaga, Shiroro, Munya, Bosso, and Suleja local government areas, while KIFFMA Company will oversee Magama, Mashegu, and Rijau LGAs.

Nasko called on union members and local businessmen, particularly those in Minna’s markets, to cooperate with these appointed companies. He emphasized that the Union has been entrusted with overseeing this initiative, which aims to boost state development. The Union is working to connect its members across these local governments to facilitate a smoother implementation of the project.

Affirming the Union’s commitment to support any development initiative that aids in increasing government revenue, Nasko assured that the Union’s doors are open for collaboration, provided they are given the necessary legal mandate. He noted that while over 500 mining companies operate in Niger State, fewer than 200 have engaged with state authorities.

Highlighting the challenge faced by the appointed companies, Nasko pointed out that without proper guidance, they may struggle due to limited knowledge of the local mining workforce. The Union plans to assist these companies, leveraging its existing relationships with the state government.

Nasko also praised the state government’s efforts in addressing the challenges faced by the mining sector, particularly the temporary lifting of restrictions which he hopes will lead to a permanent solution. He assured that compliant mining companies and laborers would be able to work without interference.

Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, during the Taskforce inauguration, confirmed the registration of over 500 mining companies, with more than 200 identified by the state government. He emphasized the Union’s role in educating companies on state laws to ensure security and compliance.

In addition, Nasko announced that application forms for the local government leadership election within NUMW would be available from the 19th of this month at the state Union Secretariat, encouraging interested candidates to apply.

Nasko concluded by commending Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for his efforts to alleviate the mining sector’s challenges and pledged continued support for his administration and the new revenue collection companies.
