The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken significant action to ensure that only qualified graduates receive the national service certificate. In a recent move, 54 corps members who were wrongly mobilized by the University of Calabar have been removed from the program.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, shared this information on Saturday in Abuja. He emphasized that those involved will face legal consequences.
Additionally, 19 other individuals who had begun the registration process online were stopped from continuing with the service. The NYSC also withheld the certificates of National Service for four other individuals involved in the illegal mobilization. This action comes after the recent invalidation of 101 certificates, bringing the total to 178 certificates that have been voided by the NYSC.
Brigadier General Ahmed praised Professor Florence Obi, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, for her honesty in alerting the NYSC about the unqualified graduates from her institution. He explained that Professor Obi noticed some names on the institution’s list that should not have been there. She reported this to the NYSC, and as a result, those certificates were invalidated.
The Director General also mentioned a previous case where a bread seller was included on the graduation list from the same university, pointing out that there are people within institutions who manipulate the system to generate fake matriculation numbers and courses.
NYSC is committed to cleaning up its mobilisation process and will work closely with all Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and other relevant parties in the country to eliminate such practices. General Ahmed stressed that the responsibility for ensuring accurate data entry lies with the integrity of the institution’s management. He urged employers across the country to verify the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented by job seekers.
