The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has invalidated the national service certificates of 101 graduates from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) due to fraudulent mobilization. This decision was announced on August 12, 2024, and affects 99 graduates who were illegally mobilized during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 service years, along with two individuals who received exemption certificates unlawfully.
In a statement, NYSC emphasized its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the national service program. The organization aims to ensure that only qualified individuals, particularly those from accredited institutions, receive NYSC Certificates of National Service. Eddy Megwa, the NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, reiterated the importance of verifying the authenticity of these certificates to prevent unqualified individuals from participating in the program.
The NYSC’s one-year national service is mandatory for Nigerian graduates under 30 years old. Those over 30 receive exemption certificates. Graduates typically need to present their NYSC certificates when seeking employment, making the validity of these documents crucial for their career prospects.
The NYSC has urged employers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to verify the authenticity of the certificates presented to them. This includes checking with the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja to avoid hiring individuals with fraudulent credentials.
While UNICAL’s spokesperson, Effiong Bassey, stated he was unaware of the situation, the NYSC’s action reflects a broader effort to combat certificate fraud and uphold the program’s credibility. The NYSC has warned that it will continue to take action against any individuals or institutions involved in fraudulent mobilization.
As the situation unfolds, it highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within the NYSC system, ensuring that only qualified graduates are recognized and allowed to serve in the national scheme.
