The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has accused some agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of helping criminals. He made these claims while meeting the new Benin Zonal Director of EFCC, Effa Okim, at his palace in Benin City, Edo State, on Monday.
Oba Ewuare II urged the EFCC to tackle crime without bias. He pointed out a case where former palace officials, arrested for fraud and handed over to the EFCC, were let off with minor penalties. The Oba questioned why EFCC investigators ignored clear evidence of fraud against these officials.
The Oba expressed his dissatisfaction with the previous EFCC leadership and their handling of the case, mentioning that he had even sent a letter and an emissary to the former EFCC Chairman to address these concerns. He criticized a specific female EFCC officer, suggesting that she was more influenced by bribes than by her duty to the EFCC.
Despite his criticisms, the Oba expressed optimism about the newly appointed EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, believing that he is on the right path if he continues to perform his duties with integrity.
