Former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized the importance of security during his administration and urged contemporary leaders to act decisively against the rising tide of insecurity in Nigeria.
During a visit to Bauchi on Sunday, where he met with Emir Dr. Rilwanu Adamu, Obasanjo voiced his alarm over the escalating security issues in the country.
He pointed out that effective responses to insecurity necessitate collaboration with local leaders, as many offenders reside within the communities they target.
The seasoned politician recommended that community policing serves as the most effective means of identifying wrongdoers. He stated, “While in office, we made the security of lives and property a top priority. It is crucial that we address this pressing issue without delay.”
He elaborated, “Community policing is the most effective security strategy, as it fosters familiarity among neighbors, making it easier to spot those who don’t belong.”
Obasanjo called upon traditional authorities to promote community policing in their areas to help curtail crime rates.
Reflecting on his time in office, he remarked, “We worked together as a united front, making collective decisions to achieve our goals. My brother, Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu, is here and can attest to that. Our accomplishments were the result of our joint efforts.”
He concluded by stressing the need for peace, unity, and collective action in Nigeria, stating, “For our nation to progress, we must come together. We can restore hope and positivity in this country if we unite and work collaboratively.”
