Former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has stressed that the battle against corruption in Nigeria must begin with accountability among the highest levels of leadership.

During a live session in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo highlighted the critical role of leading by example in the fight against corruption.

“The most effective approach to battling corruption is to start from the top,” he stated, emphasizing that a true commitment to integrity from top officials would create a positive ripple effect throughout the country.

He characterized corruption as a “hydra-headed” menace that is deeply entrenched in society, necessitating persistent and unwavering efforts to address.

Using a powerful metaphor, he compared corruption to a “babariga” (a traditional garment) that is challenging to handle from all sides without making concessions.

Furthermore, Obasanjo called for reforms in the way leaders are selected, advocating for appointments based on merit rather than tribal or political connections.

The former president urged leaders to focus more on transparency and to use a sense of divine purpose in order to achieve lasting national development.
