Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he was unaware that former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, had pleaded with late General Sani Abacha to spare his life during his imprisonment.
Obasanjo expressed his appreciation for Gowon’s intervention at a recent event, highlighting the significance of his actions when Abacha imprisoned him following an alleged coup attempt.
During a program, Gowon recalled the circumstances surrounding the coup that led to Obasanjo’s incarceration and disclosed that he had written to Abacha, urging him not to execute Obasanjo.
This revelation came during an interdenominational Christmas Carol organized by the Plateau State government.
In response to Gowon’s comments, Obasanjo expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that he had been unaware of Gowon’s personal efforts to secure his release.
“I want to acknowledge my superior, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he shared a revelation that I must specifically thank him for,” Obasanjo stated.
“After my release from prison, I had the chance to hear about the friends, both inside and outside, who prayed for and appealed for my freedom. I traveled around the globe to thank those identified to me as having contributed to my release. However, I had no idea that you personally wrote a letter advocating for my release until you revealed it yesterday. I sincerely appreciate that,” he added.
