Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that his propensity to speak out on national and international matters led to his imprisonment during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha in 1995.
During an interactive session with young leaders from across Africa, organized by the Future Africa Leaders Foundation at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, he shared that his desire to prevent Nigeria from disintegrating motivated him to pursue the presidency in 1999.
According to a statement from his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo made these remarks while hosting the foundation’s delegation, which included the ten recipients of the Challenging Future Africa Leaders Awards.
He praised the participants and the founder of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for organizing the 2024 edition of the program.
“What Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has accomplished since 2013 is commendable,” Obasanjo stated. “Some may argue that it’s just a drop in the ocean, but many such drops contribute to creating the ocean. I am very pleased with his efforts on this initiative and wish him continued success.”
