Thomas Tuchel has announced that he will not be staying on as the head coach of Bayern Munich. His decision comes after a disappointing season for the club, Which Includes losing the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen and underwhelming domestic cup performances.
In a press conference before Bayern’s match against Hoffenheim, Tuchel confirmed that he had recently held discussions with the club about possibly reversing his initial decision to leave and staying for the next season.
However, the German coach has made it clear that he will not be continuing with the club next season.
Tuchel stated, “This is my last press conference. The agreement from February still stands. There were discussions again, but we couldn’t reach an agreement. So, we’re sticking with the agreement from February.”
The German coach has previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain, and he also lifted the Champions League trophy with Chelsea in 2021
While Tuchel’s departure means that Bayern will need to find a new head coach, there have been reports that they have already opened talks with former boss Hansi Flick.
Flick previously managed Bayern from 2019 to 2021, winning the Champions League and back-to-back Bundesliga titles. He then took over as the head coach of the German national team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Another potential candidate for the role was Xabi Alonso, but he has confirmed his commitment to Leverkusen for the upcoming season after leading them to their first-ever Bundesliga title.
Julian Nagelsmann, who was previously dismissed by Bayern in February last year, was also linked with a return. However, he decided to extend his contract as the head coach of the German national team.
Ralf Ragnick, the former interim head coach at Manchester United, was on the verge of taking on the role at Bayern but ultimately declined.
He will instead focus on leading Austria during the upcoming European Championship this summer.
Tuchel has had a rather decent tenure at Bayern, winning the Bundesliga title in the 2022-23 season and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League this season, only to be defeated by Real Madrid.
