The Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers (NIWES) has urged students in Ogun State to adopt regular handwashing and proper sanitation practices to prevent cholera.

The National Chairman of NIWES, Engr. Dr. Adeyinka Sobowale, emphasized this during an advocacy talk on Friday, focusing on cholera prevention and the dangers of open defecation. Sobowale highlighted the urgency of this initiative due to recent cholera outbreaks in several states, which have resulted in loss of life

He noted that NIWES as part of its social responsibility to the Society embarked on the sensitization to school pupils and and students in Odeda Local Government Nursery and Primary School, Aaya; Odeda Local Government Nursery and Primary School,Alabata and Muslim High School, Isolu, all in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State “We are here today to inform you about the outbreak of Cholera in some states of the federation.

We learnt that Ogun recorded a casualty while about 24 people are receiving treatment in government health facilities. “NIWES believe that an advocacy like this will go a long way in educating you, so that you can educate others to about the dangers inherent in habituating in a dirty environment.

“We, have come here today, to donate hand washing materials, liquid soaps, others for your use. Regular hand washing after carrying out an activity is very important. Living in a clean environment drives diseases away.

“NIWES as a foremost body in the Nigeria water sector is urging you to maintain personal hygiene.” Corroborating Sobowale, the National Programme officer of NIWES, Engr (Mrs) Temitope Aboyeji and Associate Professor Kola Onanade, insisted on promotion of basic hygiene to keep diseases away.

The Headteachers of OLG, Aaya, Camp area and OLG, Alabata village, Mrs. Dorcas Gbenjo and Mr. R.A Akindeinde, appreciated NIWES for the donation of handwashing buckets and other materials for the use of the pupils in particular and the entire schools in general .
