The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has ushered in a new era with the election of Hon. Abayomi Tella, the former chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, as its new party chairman. This significant change took place during the State Congress held in Abeokuta on Saturday, which was overseen by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his inaugural address, Tella expressed a commitment to revitalizing, rebuilding, and repositioning the party in preparation for the upcoming 2027 elections. He emphasized the necessity of restoring the party’s legacy and its identity as a leading political force.
“Our genuine identity is not that of an opposition party; we are destined to reclaim our status as a ruling party, and this transformation is imminent in the next elections,” Tella asserted. He attributed the success of this congress to the many influential figures who played pivotal roles in this initiative.
Tella assured party members that the Ogun State PDP would undergo a comprehensive rejuvenation, preparing for success in future elections. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the party, including internal strife, legal disputes, and negative media portrayals by supposed allies.
“Historically, the PDP has been the most successful party in Ogun State, achieving an unprecedented sweep in the 2003 and 2007 national elections. It’s troubling that despite this legacy, we are still viewed as an opposition party,” he remarked.
He highlighted the PDP’s achievements in governance, noting that it organized one of the most successful National Sports Festivals and significantly expanded employment opportunities, built sporting facilities, and enhanced educational institutions during its tenure.
“Under our administration, we elevated the economic prosperity of Ogun State, a progress that has since been undermined by the APC, resulting in increased poverty among our citizens. It is disheartening to see our party described as unproductive,” Tella lamented, calling on former party members who have joined the APC to return and support the PDP’s resurgence.
Tella finally expressed gratitude to the outgoing executives and reiterated the importance of unity and collaboration. “The 2027 election is at the forefront of our agenda, and it is vital that we work together to achieve our goals,” he stated.
