The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has dismissed a lawsuit filed by 16 political parties aiming to delay the local government elections scheduled for November 16th.

During the proceedings, Justice T. A. Okunsokan addressed the case identified as AB/577/2024, Action Alliance & 15 Ors v. OGSIEC & Anor. He ruled against the political parties’ assertions that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) had acted unilaterally and tyrannically by setting the election date without consulting the parties involved.

Justice Okunsokan firmly stated that there is no constitutional or electoral law requirement mandating the electoral commission to consult political parties prior to determining election dates.

Additionally, the court dismissed the argument presented by the parties claiming that the timing of the Ondo State governorship elections coinciding with the Ogun local government elections warranted a postponement.

As a result, the court upheld the previously announced date for the Ogun State local government elections, confirming that they will proceed as scheduled on November 16, 2024.
