The Ogun State Government has announced preventive measures to avert a potential cholera outbreak, similar to those reported in other states.
Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, expressed the governor’s significant concern over the issue.
“We must protect our residents, especially given our proximity to Lagos and the frequent interactions between the two states,” Akinmade stated.
He emphasized that these precautions are particularly critical with the Sallah holiday.
Measures include a directive requiring all houses to have toilets. Homes lacking a toilet must convert a room into one within three to six months.
Furthermore, all petrol stations, garages, parks, markets, and mechanic villages must have operational public toilets with running water. Both public and private schools are also mandated to ensure they have toilets with running water.
Residents have been urged to drink only safe water, either boiled or chlorinated, and to practice proper hand-washing with soap after using the toilet and before handling food. Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed with safe water.
Akinmade assured that the Ministry of Environment will rigorously enforce these measures, and violators will face legal consequences.
