Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the prominent socio-cultural group representing the Igbo people, has raised alarm over the unfolding events surrounding the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a recent statement, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the organization’s Secretary General, criticized the governors of the Southeast for their role in Kanu’s ongoing trials.
The statement highlighted several key points:
“Our attention has been drawn to the surprising yet significant decision made by Justice Binta Nyako to withdraw from overseeing Kanu’s case. This commendable action reveals a deeper issue within the political dynamics affecting our community’s future.
“Nigerians, particularly the Ndigbo, have been closely watching the complex legal proceedings involving Mazi Kanu, especially with the new terrorism charges against him.
“It is essential to uphold the right to a fair trial and ensure that the accused has faith in the judicial system. Kanu’s expressed dissatisfaction and loss of trust in the legal process are serious issues that must not be overlooked.
“We commend Justice Binta Nyako for her choice to recuse herself, showcasing her dedication to judicial integrity in a highly emotional environment.
However, our focus goes beyond the courtroom, extending into the political realm where tangible actions could have been initiated to support Kanu and other Igbo political detainees.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo holds the Southeast Governors responsible for their apparent failure to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the urgent need for political solutions to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
“The inaction from these leaders, following expected discussions, undermines our collective aspirations and raises doubts about their dedication to the people they represent.”
The organization pointed out that previous political engagements, particularly a closed-door meeting in July 2024 attended by influential figures such as Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and HRM Igwe Alfred Achebe, featured a public commitment from the Southeast Governors to address Kanu’s plight with President Tinubu.
However, nearly three months later, this promise remains unfulfilled.
“The lack of proactive measures stirs suspicion among the populace, leading to legitimate concerns that Nnamdi Kanu might be a pawn sacrificed for political gain in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges the Southeast Governors to reignite the righteous determination they exhibited in July and to follow through on their promise to engage President Tinubu.
“Realizing this commitment is not just a diplomatic maneuver; it is a moral obligation that reflects the integrity and unity we expect from our leaders.
“The credibility of our political representatives rests on their ability to turn promises into action, especially on such sensitive matters,” the statement concluded.
